Vodnjan is just a 10 minutes’ drive away from Pula, the city in Istria that’s in every Croatian tourist map. Pula is 3000 years old and has wonderful remains from all periods that prove it. The most famous and the largest monument in Pula is the 1st century amphitheater, or the Arena. It is perfectly preserved, so today various events are held here. Other remains from the antiquity are worth visiting as well, so don’t miss out seeing the old city gates, the Arch of the Sergii, the Temple of Augustus and many others; less famous ones but not less appealing attractions can be found in Pula dating back to the Middle ages (palaces and the Venetian fortress on the central hill) and the times of Austrian rule (secession and fortification architecture). The Brijuni national park can be visited from the place Fažana, an old fisherman village with great beaches. The archipelago of Brijuni has so much to show and the largest one of them, Veli Brijun, is opened for public. What amazes everyone is the beautiful nature and the tame animals in it, the calmness of the place and the interesting history of the islands. Vodnjan is a town that was founded during the Roman rule and that today has a medieval appearance with many interesting palaces dating way back from the 14th century. The church of st. Blaise holds records in many categories; it’s the main tourist attraction of Vodnjan, the biggest church in Istria with the tallest tower and holds the largest sacral collection in Istria including the Vodnjan mummies. There’s another church in proximity of Vodnjan that attracts many people: The church of st. Fosca. Lots of them swear that they feel the positive energy of the place where this building stands. Vodnjan is also known for its shepherds’ little stone houses (kažuns) in the surrounding area, where around 3000 of them can be found.
