Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is a city on the southern part of Croatian Adriatic, a very important historical and tourist point and one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. This city has an amazing history – it was an independent state for over four centuries. The Republic of Ragusa was specialized in maritime trading, it had a great diplomacy network that helped this small city-state survive during the Medieval times. The other Dubrovnik’s strength was its fortification system – its city walls, today the trademark of Dubrovnik, were never breached. Today they serve a different function, as a sightseeing attraction. The Walls of Dubrovnik recently gained another dimension because the filming of the world popular series Games of Thrones took place in this location.
Dubrovnik itself is a monument. But consisted of other wonderful monuments. The city walls were built between the 13th and the 17th century, they are almost two kilometres long and have fortresses on all sides: Minčeta, Bokar, Sv. Ivan and Revelin. The fortress Lovrijenac is on a cliff above the sea next to the city walls, and the youngest one is Imperijal on the hill Srđ above the city. The entrance to the old city core is through the eastern (od Ploča) and the western (od Pila) City Gate and there you will find numerous attractions, mainly from the reinessance, the age of Dubrovnik’s wealth. Rector’s Palace, Sponza Palace, Franciscan Church and Monastery, the statue of Orlando, the Church of st. Blaise, the patron of Dubrovnik, Onofrio’s Fountain – are only some of them.
