D.O.K. – Dani orade i kalamara in Ližnjan: A Villa Guest's Guide, 6–8 Nov 2026
Free entry, music, a pub quiz, the Marlera Cup, the 2nd Kalamarijada and local producers on Bura Bura Beach — a practical guide for villa guests near Ližnjan, 6–8 November 2026.

If your villa week stretches into early November, you've timed it well. From Friday to Sunday, the fishing village of Ližnjan trades its summer quiet for three days of fishing-themed competitions, music and seafood at D.O.K. – Dani orade i kalamara (Sea Bream and Squid Days), held on Bura Bura Beach. Entry to the event is free, it's easy to reach from villas around Medulin and Pula, and it's a pleasant way to enjoy the coast before winter sets in.
What and where
The event takes place from 6 to 8 November 2026 at Bura Bura Beach (also known as Bura Bura/Salbunić), in Kuje Bay just outside Ližnjan. A marquee is set up on the beach, and entry to the festival grounds is free of charge. Alongside the music, workshops and competitions, local producers will have stands with olive oil, wine, honey, natural cosmetics, craft beer and souvenirs — a good opportunity to pick up something local to take home.
Locals describe the festival as a weekend built around seafood specialities, fishing-themed competitions and live music, with something planned for every generation, from toddlers to grandparents.
Friday 6 November: opening, music and a pub quiz
The weekend opens at 5:30 PM with a formal opening ceremony involving local kindergarten and school children. At 6 PM, "Zemlja zabave" runs a creative workshop for kids, followed at 6:30 PM by a pub quiz for the grown-ups. The evening then turns musical, with a DJ set from 8 PM, Luzeri on stage at 9 PM, and S.A.R.S. closing the night at 10:30 PM. If you fancy an easy first night out from the villa, this is a relaxed way to start — arrive in time for the opening and stay for the music.
Saturday 7 November: the big day, all day
Saturday is the heart of the festival. Verification of competitors for the 17th "Marlera" Cup spearfishing competition, organised by the local Marlera fishing club, takes place from 7 AM to 8 AM, with the competition itself running from 9 AM to 2 PM. The wider festival area opens to visitors at 10 AM. On the programme:
- A round-table discussion from 11 AM to 12 PM titled "Microplastics Research Results from Ližnjan's Beaches. From Research to Concrete Solutions," part of the Plastic Free Ližnjan project
- Inflatable attractions and an interactive children's workshop
- A mini painting school for younger visitors
- A squid risotto cooking competition, with teams battling it out over their recipes
Once the daytime activities wind down, the music takes over: Ivan Licul & Band at 8 PM, followed by Luka Basi at 10 PM. If you're planning just one visit for the weekend, Saturday gives you the fullest programme — arrive by early afternoon so the children can enjoy the inflatables and workshops before dinner, then stay on for the concerts.
Sunday 8 November: a family and fishing-gastronomy finale
Sunday has no major concerts announced; instead, it's built around family activities and one of the festival's main events, the 2nd Kalamarijada squid-fishing competition. The day runs as follows:
- 11 AM–12:30 PM – competitor registration
- 12–6 PM – inflatable attractions and children's entertainment
- 1–6 PM – the 2nd Kalamarijada squid-fishing competition
- 1:30–2 PM – Mini Squid School, led by Eros Sorić from SRU Marlera, introducing participants to equipment, fishing techniques and scoring criteria
- 4:30 PM – preparation of a traditional fish dish, brodet or gregada, organised by SRU Marlera
- 5–5:45 PM – building styrofoam sailboats
- 5:45–6 PM – sailboat race in the pool
- 7 PM – catch weigh-in and announcement of winners
Visitors can enjoy a gastronomic offer based on sea bream and squid, as well as traditional fish dishes. It's a gentler, family-friendly last stop before packing up for the week — no loud concerts, just competitions, good food and a seaside afternoon.
Getting there from your villa
Ližnjan sits right on the coast a short drive south of Pula and just next to Medulin, so a visit fits neatly into half a day without eating into the rest of your holiday plans. A range of food and drink from local stalls will be available throughout the event, so there's no need to plan dinner elsewhere if you want to make an evening of it. As with any busy local event, it's worth setting off with a little extra time in case parking near the beach fills up.
Bring a light jacket for the evening programme; November by the sea in Istria is mild during the day but can turn cool once the sun goes down.
Why it's worth the trip
D.O.K. – Dani orade i kalamara is a relaxed, family-friendly gathering with free entry, live music, local producers and genuinely local food, all within easy reach of villas in the Medulin, Pula and Ližnjan area. It's unpretentious and a good excuse to get out of the pool villa for an afternoon or evening without any need to book ahead. For those staying a little longer, Ližnjan also carries the festive mood into 11 November, with events marking Martinje (St Martin's Day).
If you're already settled into a villa nearby for the week, it's worth building one of these three days into your plans — Saturday if you want the full programme, Sunday if you'd rather keep things calm with the kids and watch the Kalamarijada.
